Dear Metropolitan School District of Wabash County parents, guardians, staff, and students:

My name is Mike Keaffaber and I am honored and privileged to be your new superintendent. I realize I have huge shoes to fill with the successes of past superintendents.  We have a great school district!  I would like to take just a few moments to introduce myself and family and give you a brief idea of my philosophy of education and life in general.

For my entire life, Wabash County has been home. I attended Wabash City Schools through fifth grade and then enrolled in Southwood Elementary when our family moved from town to southern Wabash County. My dad (hero) was a teacher/Band Director for 29 years starting at LaFontaine High School and then Southwood Jr./Sr. High School before his unexpected passing. One of the main reasons we moved was so my sister, brother, and I could attend school where my dad taught. After graduating from Southwood, I graduated from Marion College (IWU now, yes, that makes me old) with an elementary education major. After college, I became a teacher of 4th grade students for ten years at Converse Elementary in the Oak Hill United School Corporation. My first administration experience was becoming the Oak Hill Junior High School Principal for nine years. Oak Hill reconfigured the elementaries and I then became the Sweetser Elementary principal for four years before coming to MSD.  I was principal at White’s Jr./Sr. High School for three years, principal at Northfield Jr./Sr. High School for four years, and then became Assistant Superintendent of Finance along with the titles of Director of Transportation and Director of Food Service for one year.  I am honored and privileged to be named the Superintendent of Metropolitan School District of Wabash County.

My wonderful wife of 30 years is the former Susan Schenkel, Northfield Alumni, and she is a kindergarten teacher at O.J. Neighbours.  She is talented in many areas and is the organist at our church.  We have a daughter, Hilary (24) who works at Rolling Meadows and loves animals.  Our son, Grant (22) is beginning his last semester at Indiana Wesleyan with a degree in Accounting and Finance.  He has had much success on IWU’s cross county and track teams and has his Private Pilot’s license.

I trust you will find me very approachable and have somewhat of a simplistic philosophy of life and education: Work Hard and Be Nice. There is much that goes into this philosophy, but it is one that can make anyone successful!

Finally, I am excited about this opportunity to work with the students, staff, parents, and community at Metropolitan School District of Wabash County.

Educationally yours,

Mike Keaffaber

MSD of Wabash County serves students in five townships (except that portion of Noble Township which comprises Wabash City Schools) of southern Wabash County, covering 292 square miles in a beautiful, rural/small town environment.

The district consists of six schools with about 2300 students. There are three elementary schools and three junior-senior high schools. One of the high schools is White's Jr.-Sr. High School which provides education for about 150 students from across the state who are residents at White's Residential and Family Services as a result of a court placement. In addition, the district is the LEA for special education services to students in four school districts.
