drwTough calls about whether school is in session:

Many factors are taken into consideration as we make the determination to delay or close school.  As the temperature drops, we consider more  than wind chill. If the actual temperature is -10 some of our buses become inoperable. It would be of grave concern to have students standing in bitter cold waiting for a bus that has had trouble.

Road conditions are always taken into account. There are many times that blowing and drifting snow cause hazardous driving conditions.  The district employees professional drivers, but many of our students drive to school on their own.  We factor in their driving abilities when making weather related decisions. Please remember, parents always have the final say. Parents can decide to keep their children at home if they believe conditions are unsafe. Parents need to call their child’s school and inform them of their decision. The school district and parents work together to ensure student safety.

We are one of the top technology enhanced school districts in the state of Indiana. Our students reap the benefits of this from their ability to learn anywhere and at anytime using their mobile devices. Through eLearning we are able to continue education even in the event of inclement weather. However, we know we need to ensure that our students have authentic, essential learning occurring during these days. As a school staff, we are learning more about ways to improve student learning on these days. We have made great strides, because everyone in our organization is a life-long learner. We are eagerly embracing new strategies.

As I talked with my parents who are in their 80s, I found myself explaining some of the new directions in education. You don't have to be in your 80's to have questions about what's new in education; as with all technology, the applications and programs have unfamiliar names. Let's talk about My Big Campus and Edmodo. These are Learning Management Systems that allow our students and teachers a way to access and collaborate on assignments. myOn is a digital literacy platform offering access to more than 7,000 digital books. Skyward is our student information system that allows parents and students to check grades. Have you heard of a Flipped Classroom? This type of instruction focuses on the student listening to lectures on their computers at home and doing what has typically been thought of as homework at school with the teacher available to assist them. Instead of paper/pencil tests, our students take ISTEP+ online. Many students report that they are better writers on the computer than on paper.

I never want to hear anyone start a negative comment about our students by saying, "Kids today are ......". Our kids today are smart, capable and driven. They learn differently. They interact differently. Their expectations are different. Not bad, just different. We need to honor how bright and motivated our 21st century students are.

KIDS FIRST, LAST AND ALWAYS! Kids are our driving force. Every employee at Metropolitan School District of Wabash County shares this philosophy.

Welcome to MSD Wabash County!

MSD of Wabash County serves students in five townships (except that portion of Noble Township which comprises Wabash City Schools) of southern Wabash County, covering 292 square miles in a beautiful, rural/small town environment.

The district consists of seven schools with about 2600 students. There are four elementary schools and three junior-senior high schools. One of the high schools is White's Jr.-Sr. High School which provides education for about 150 students from across the state who are residents at White's Residential and Family Services as a result of a court placement. In addition, the district is the LEA for special education services to students in four school districts.
