MSDWC Calendar Survey

Senator Delph has introduced legislation in the past that would move decisions on the school calendar from the local school board to the Indiana Legislature.  It is anticipated he will introduce the same type of legislation this year.

We had recently shared a similar survey, but your results went into a larger pool with citizens' responses from the entire state.  We are now interested in our own patrons' opinions.  Please respond by completing this short survey.  The data collection is open now until midnight Friday, February 10, 2012.

Many balanced calendars have a two-week break following a nine-week period.  Visit this link to see an example of a balanced calendar used by the Maconaquah School System.

Delay and Closing Information

It’s that time of year to review how delay and closing decisions are made. MSD of Wabash County has 3 staff members - Assistant Superintendent Brian Dawson, Maintenance Director Steve Holley, and WMAP Transportation Director John Diener, who drive nearly 100 miles of roads when weather conditions are questionable in an effort for us to make the best decision to keep everyone safe. These staff members also drive specific roads/areas such as Waterworks Road hill, 550 W, and the “narrows” since these are especially hazardous. Dr. Dawson and I communicate with all the county school superintendents as well as superintendents from Peru and Oak Hill as the decision is made. I monitor television and radio weather reports as well. Dr. Dawson is in touch with the county highway department as needed. The ultimate decision to delay, cancel, or go on time rests with me. The first decision is made no later than 6:15 a.m.  In the event that there is a two hour delay the entire process starts again as we re-evaluate road conditions.  The decision to go from a 2 hour delay to a 3 hour delay or cancel is made no later than 8:15 a.m.  Our top priority is safety.

In the event weather moves in during the school day that would make for hazardous travel, roads are driven, conditions are monitored, and Wabash County Highway is contacted.  Once a decision is made to release school early it takes approximately one hour to get the buses in place at the schools.  Again, safety is our top priority.

Message From Dr. Weaver

DrWeaver
Our mission is to build the mind and character of every student to produce positive citizens for the 21st century. As I start my fourth year as superintendent, I continue to marvel at the level of respect demonstrated by our students. We have the opportunity to work with outstanding young people!

The Metropolitan School District of Wabash County has a staff that is unrivaled in their dedication. Our bus drivers greet students each morning with a warm smile and deliver them to their door with a wish for a great evening. Our custodians have faced a herculean task this year and have sailed through with flying colors. Our food service staff provides smiles along with healthy choices of menu items to ensure our students have enough nourishment to stay focused on learning all day. We have wonderful classroom assistants who offer extra help to students and supervise playgrounds, media centers, and cafeterias.  Our office staff keeps each building running smoothly and is that calming voice on the phone during busy days. Coaches are at practices long hours helping our student athletes perform at top levels. Our teachers and administrators are unsurpassed in their continual efforts to make sure all students succeed everyday.

Often we hear about teachers only working nine months a year. I have been in buildings this summer and seen our teachers diligently preparing for the coming year. We have teachers working on new curriculum, new technology, and in new buildings. Teachers have been involved in professional development during the summer as they anticipate this school year. Our teachers are dedicated to our students during the school year and beyond!

We need parents, staff, and community members working together as we strive for greater student success. I urge you to get involved in the important task of children’s education. If you can volunteer in classrooms, please call your nearest school.  Ask yourself how you can be part of making this the best year for students at Metropolitan School District of Wabash County.

Our schools are strong which leads to a strong community with a strong future!

Welcome to MSD Wabash County!

MSD of Wabash County serves students in five townships (except that portion of Noble Township which comprises Wabash City Schools) of southern Wabash County, covering 292 square miles in a beautiful, rural/small town environment.

The district consists of seven schools with about 2600 students. There are four elementary schools and three junior-senior high schools. One of the high schools is White's Jr.-Sr. High School which provides education for about 150 students from across the state who are residents at White's Residential and Family Services as a result of a court placement. In addition, the district is the LEA for special education services to students in four school districts.

Classroom Innovation Grant

Apple (C) iPad/Image courtesy Matt BuchananMetropolitan School District of Wabash County was one of only 22 school districts of 135 that applied to receive the prestigious Classroom Innovation Grant. The IDOE believes M. S. D. of Wabash County will promote educational innovation through the use of technology.

We will be establishing model classrooms using iPads and Macbooks. Walk into one classroom and see content being delivered not through textbooks, but through on-line media. Stroll down the hall and find other students not only reading content, but writing their own on wikis and blogs. We know students learn better when they are active participants in their own learning.

One example of digital media our students will be using is the Discovery Education Techbook.  Many of our fourth, fifth, and sixth graders will be using iPads purchased through the Classroom Innovation grant along with desktop computers to access digital media through the Techbook for Science class.

We will be able to collaborate with professional educators in the county, across the state and across the world. Staff will have professional development targeted to their proficiency level in order that they may provide top quality instruction to students through enhanced use of technology.

We are very excited and humbled by the opportunities the IDOE Classroom Innovation Grant will give us.  Check back often for updates!
