I love being in the classroom. I loved it when I was a student at Southwood, and I considered it an honor to be invited back as a teacher in the fall of 2002. I loved my history teacher Mr. (Larry) Landis. I thought he did a great job of making class interesting long before computers and the internet dominated schools. I try to emulate him in that I try to make US History exciting and engaging. One of the ways I try to do this is by incorporating as much local history as I can into the lessons. Sometimes I add people, sometimes businesses, and sometimes locations into our lectures. To see a picture of the “cut” (highway 15 heading south from the bridge) as it was being cut and asking the students if they know what it is or where, surprises them to find out what they’re looking at (the picture barely looks wide enough for 2 modern cars). I want to make a positive impact in the lives of my students. I want them to know that they have value and they can also make a positive difference in the world they live in. And while we at it, learn a little history in the process.
